From 10 to 13 May 2026, within the framework of the “Water Management at Municipal Level in Libya” (MUWALI) project, funded by the European Union and implemented by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) – Tunis Office, a delegation composed of the Mayors of nine Libyan municipalities participating in the project, representatives of the Ministry of Local Government (MoLG), and institutional partners carried out an institutional and technical visit to the Autonomous Province of Trento, as part of the cooperation activities foreseen by the project.
Funded by the European Union and launched in 2025 under the leadership of AICS Tunis, the MUWALI project is implemented in cooperation with the Trentino consortium composed of the Autonomous Province of Trento, the International Cooperation Centre, and the University of Trento.
The initiative aims to strengthen water sector governance and sustainable water resource management at local level in Libya, promoting an integrated approach and decentralized cooperation between Libyan and Italian institutions.
The visit represented an important opportunity for exchange and dialogue among the institutions involved, through technical and institutional meetings dedicated to sustainable water resource management and local water governance.
Field visits held on 11 May in the areas of Rovereto and Mori were particularly appreciated, focusing on local water management systems and precision irrigation practices, with attention to their possible applications and adaptations in the Libyan context.
On 12 May, an institutional meeting was also held at the Castello del Buonconsiglio, headquarters of the Autonomous Province of Trento, during which participants discussed priorities, challenges, and cooperation strategies in the field of local water governance.
The mission is part of the activities aimed at strengthening institutional dialogue and technical capacities promoted by the MUWALI project, with the objective of consolidating long-term partnerships between Libyan and Italian local authorities and contributing to more resilient and sustainable water resource management.
